frequently asked questions

What is 4k and 2k?
These terms reference the image size in which the picture
is captured.

4k = 4096 horizontal pixels x 2304 vertical pixels
2k = 2049 horizontal pixels x 1152 vertical pixels

Originally used in traditional 35mm film scanning for the
Digital Intermediate (DI) process (35mm Celluloid Film Digital
Post Production).

Isn't shooting 4k expensive?
In the past it has been expensive to work at 4k and a cost effective 2k workflow is normally used.

Other digital cinema cameras have been very costly and only
big budget productions could really afford to use them. RED is an affordable solution that actually surpasses the competition, this is down to a high degree of advances in technology.

The industry is experiencing a major change in structure as new players join the market, offering high quality products at more achievable rates.

Do you hire just the camera?
We do not dry hire the camera.

Mine offer a complete production package with the ability to
take your project from concept to completion, our services
are modular and include Directing, DoP, DIT, Finishing and
Colour Grading.

Can RED shoot slow motion?
Yes RED can shoot at 60fps in 4k, 2k and HD 1080p.
120 fps can be recored in HD 720p.

How much 4k footage can you record to disK?
REDDrive - 320Gb = 196 minutes of 4k
REDRam - 64Gb = 35 minutes of 4k
REDFlash - 32Gb = 17 minutes of 4k

REDDrive is 2 x 2.5" Hard Drives working as a RAID. This external recording media is suited to tripod, crane or shoulder mounted shots where the camera is stable.

REDRam is made up of SATA Flash memory.
This external recording media is suited to Steadicam, Car Mount, Handheld or Helicopter mounted shots where the camera will experience some vibration.

REDFlash is an onboard Flash card. This internal recording media enables the camera to be stripped down to the bear minimum for tight shots where space is an issue or the camera needs to be disguised.

Can I edit the RED footage myself?
Yes, we can supply the footage as data on disk or on tape which you can use to edit on your edit system.

Our Colour Grading system is optimized to work with RED and you can supply us the finished EDL or Final Cut Pro project file with which we can "Online" the project.

How will you supply my footage?
Footage can be supplied as data on disk or on a tape format
of your choice.

Various tape formats are supported including Digibeta, HDCam, DVCProHD, D5 and HDCam SR.

Data on disk can be supplied in Quicktime file format in whichever Codec your edit system supports.

Why is there no tape drive on RED?
Tape drives compress the image, data is lost in the process as the camera needs to encode the data before it gets stored on the tape.

Modern cameras do not use tape drives, Sony have XDcam and Panasonic have P2.

In addition having to capture the tapes into the edit system has to be done in real time, so 6 hours of rushes would take 6 hours to digitize in.

A tapeless system offers faster access to the footage as its already digitized plus the image is of higher quality because more data can be stored on the disk.

RED delivers unmatched image quality with no recording
system limitations.

Can RED record in NTSC and PAL?
The NTSC or PAL down-convert is created using REDCine software.

RED is an Ultra High Definition camera. The lowest resolution RED can record is HD 720p.

Why would I shoot 4k when my project will be shown on Standard TV?
The higher the resolution you start with, the more freedom you will have in determining the final result. This is the reason TV shows like ER, Sopranos and Friends are filmed on 35mm.

RED offers a groundbreaking image at a price point unseen
in this industry which means MINE are able to offer high-end digital cinema production and post production at the cost
of HD.

What is RAW?
RAW is the unprocessed data that is captured by the image sensor. Image formats like JPEG, DVCProHD or HDCam all are made using the RAW image data from the camera.

Much like how a Digital SLR stills camera's image is captured, RED images are stored in a RAW format.

RAW gives you much more information to work with in post
production which greatly expands the potential of the project.

What is Depth of Field (DOF)?
Depth of Field is the distance in front of and beyond the subject that appears to be in focus.

Cameras like HDV and HDcam have a deep depth of field and the frame shows mostly everything in focus giving you that video look.

With 35mm film the focus can be selective as you have a shallow depth of field. This selective focus is used by filmmakers to focus peoples attention on an object or person.

A cinematographer can be very creative with the focus creating art like pictures.

RED has the same DOF as 35mm film thus it is a Digital
Cinema Camera.
